Tonal System Hair Colour Change: A Wardrobe Shift

We know that a change in hair colour, even a subtle one, can instantly shift the balance of your personal colour palette, affecting which clothing shades truly harmonise with your complexion. Yes, Colour Me Beautiful does recognise the fact that your hair colour matters. In fact, the Tonal System really helps you to maintain harmony with the clothes that you wear, even as your personal colouring evolves.

We’re delighted to share a personal story from our talented consultant, Lindsay Edmeades, who recently transitioned to a new hair colour. She walks us through her experience, showing how the Tonal System guided her choices and how her new colours harmonise beautifully with her style.

Lindsay Edmeades: My Colour Transition and Wardrobe Shift

I started my hair transition back in April 2025, and honestly, it was time!

  • The Big Decision: I was finding it impossible to keep up with colouring my hair; those emerging ‘silver’ sections were becoming a little too demanding! My hair was also starting to suffer from all the chemicals, so I knew I had to make a decision and just let the change happen.
  • Initial Concerns: I absolutely love being a Clear and the vibrant, gorgeous shades in that palette that suit my creative side. So, I was a little apprehensive about where my natural colour journey would land me.
  • The Transition: As the silver grew out, I realised there was much more of it than I initially thought, though my natural roots were still dark. Since I already have a cool skin tone, I was confident that I would likely transition straight to being a Cool, or maybe a combination.
  • My New Palette: I’m now a Cool-Clear-Deep, having changed from Clear-Cool-Deep. My eyes are still bright, the contrast remains, and I definitely still need that depth. I’ve found that my need for Clarity has really stuck with me, and I’m absolutely better in saturated tones and high contrast than I am in anything muted!
  • The Result: My hair is now a silvery dark brown with some really lovely, stronger silver highlights! I’m totally enjoying it – it’s all natural, it’s blended beautifully, and my hair is in much better condition now that I’ve stopped colouring.
  • The Wardrobe Connection: Sticking with it required some perseverance, but now, wearing cooler shades truly makes my hair colour pop! This works even better than when I had coloured hair and, wonderfully, it totally satisfies the Natural streak in my Style Personality! Wearing the right colours has genuinely given me the confidence to ‘wear my own hair colour.’ It’s such a complementary look!

Let’s Talk Colours: What Works Now!

Here are the colours that are really singing on me now:

  • Neutrals: Navy and pewter are still firm favourites. I’m also finding charcoal and greys are much better, though I still need to make sure they don’t look flat on me. And of course, I wear contrast rather than tone-on-tone. My neutrals are a great base for adding colour to.
  • Blues: Saturated blues are just fantastic!
  • Greens: Apple green is working less well now, but richer shades like emerald and spruce are looking superb.
  • Reds: I’ve had to ditch the warmer reds. ! I now need a blue-based red or raspberry – they are so much better, as you can see in the two images. Don’t I look much better in the one on the right!
  • Brown: Not my best colour unless it has a great deal of contrast or shine to it.

Conclusion: Understanding Your Subtle Shifts

Lindsay’s journey is a fantastic illustration of the subtle, yet powerful, effect of a hair colour shift and why the tonal system is invaluable. Her colour knowledge gave her the confidence to start on this journey and understand why for example yellows and apricots no longer worked on her. She has proven that knowing your personal colour analysis is indeed a journey!

What’s fascinating about her transition is that the colour changes weren’t as drastic as some might choose; she maintained her core need for bold, saturated shades (retaining the Clear element) but wisely gravitated toward tones that carry far more blue undertones (leaning fully into her Cool element). This small adjustment, guided by her understanding of the Tonal System, has had a dramatic effect on which colours in her wardrobe, from emerald green to raspberry red, now make her look luminous and balanced.

If a subtle change can yield such powerful results, imagine what a full colour analysis could do for you! Let us show you how the Tonal system can help you with your hair colour change.
