Grey Hair Transition: Are You Ready for the Change?

Grey hair transition can feel daunting. Are you ready for the change?

At Colour Me Beautiful, we’ve spent decades helping women express their identity confidently through colour. Unlike systems that ignore or even cover the hair during analysis, we consider your hair (along with skin tone and eye colour) a crucial part of our Tonal System, because your hair is your crowning glory. Its shade, depth and tone strongly influence the colours that flatter you most. And when your hair colour changes, your palette can shift too.

This is exactly why hair often becomes the starting point of a woman’s colour journey, and why changing it, or embracing grey, can feel like such a significant decision.

Recently, two of our consultants explored very different hair journeys.

Anita’s Eight-Week Grey Experiment

Anita Feron Clark decided to grow out her grey hair, partly out of curiosity and partly because she wanted to understand, firsthand, what so many of her clients experience.

She wondered:

  • What would her natural grey pattern look like?

  • How would it feel?

  • Would she still recognise herself in the mirror?

What she loved

There were wonderful aspects to the experience:

  • The freedom of skipping appointments

  • Watching the natural blend emerge

  • Feeling connected to others walking a similar path

But as the weeks passed, Anita realised something important. Although she is fully pro-ageing and pro-choice, the timing wasn’t right. After 18 challenging months, undertaking a full grey transition felt like an additional demand she didn’t need.

Her rich brunette hair still felt most authentically her, and it aligned with her branding and personal identity. So she chose to return to colouring it.

Not a step backwards, simply the right choice for this moment in her life.

Lindsay’s Commitment to a New Look

In contrast, our previous blog featured consultant Lindsay Edmeades, who did persevere through her transition. Her shift in hair colour created a noticeable change in her overall colouring, which led to adjustments in her wardrobe and makeup. She embraced a refreshed palette and found great joy in discovering colours that enhanced her new, softer appearance.

For Lindsay, the evolution was invigorating. For Anita, returning to colour was grounding and aligned. Two journeys. Both successful. Both completely valid.

For Lindsay, the evolution was invigorating. For Anita, returning to colour was grounding and aligned. Two journeys. Both successful. Both completely valid. Your Journey Is Entirely Your Own! The contrast between Lindsay and Anita beautifully illustrates this:

  • Lindsay embraced a new palette that matched her evolving look.
  • Anita returned to colour because it felt more “her” and better supported her stage in life. Her palette and the colours she wears remains unchanged for now.

And you? You may choose to go grey now, later, or never. As Anita said, “Your timing. Your identity. Your confidence.”

There is no right or wrong path – only the one that aligns with you.
