Do you have enough neutral colours in your wardrobe? Often when our clients tell us they have nothing to wear, they are missing fundamental building block colours, and these are neutrals! Whilst a collection of vivid reds, tranquil blues, uplifting yellows may spark joy, it’s very difficult to make multiple outfits from a wardrobe of bright colours. That is, unless you are a Creative style personality, and use colour as a form of self-expression.
Charcoal grey, navy and taupe might not be as exciting as hot pink, sky blue and emerald but they will provide you with a good base for you to build lots of outfit options. Get your neutral colours right and you will find that you don’t need to have a huge wardrobe of clothes, which of course will save you money. In fact, we guarantee that you will be able to build more outfits from a small selection of clothes.
Big ticket items such as jackets, coats, wool trousers and sweaters should last you for many years to come, so it’s a good idea to buy them in neutral colours and update each season with accessories in fashion shades. A good quality pair of navy trousers in your best cut will work with many shades, whereas a pair of pink ones, won’t. It’s also likely that ‘pink’ will come in and go out of fashion whilst neutrals tend to always be around. For occasion dressing, a stunning red dress will always be remembered and you may find it difficult to wear again. But a dress in your best neutral (pewter for example), can be updated with different jewellery, bag and shoes. John Lewis, Me&Em and Phase Eight are excellent brands for occasion wear, but it very much depends on your own style as to where you shop.
